background

The whole area is very much influenced by German and Italian emigrants and sometimes looks very European and often remarkably clean and sometimes almost neat. The Gaúcho tradition is very much alive and is cultivated on many occasions.

language

Portuguese, the pronunciation is partly different from that of the rest of the country. You have to assume that no English is spoken or understood, even at the airports. However, English is now taught in all schools and the younger people increasingly understand and speak at least some English.

Since there are many immigrants of German origin living in this state, a great deal of German is still understood. It is almost only older people who speak for themselves. However, these are almost exclusively very old dialects, often from the area of the Hunsrück. It is very difficult to understand this at first. However, one is very open and interested in the German language and in Germans and Germany. If it is noticed that you speak German, you are often addressed in a very friendly manner.
