São Tomé is the capital of the island state of São Tomé and Príncipe.

Capital of São Tomé and Príncipe, the city of S. Tomé is located on the Ana Chaves bay which opens onto the north-eastern coast of the island homonymous.
Today it is one of the smallest capitals in the world with fewer than 60,000 inhabitants.
Background
Founded in 1485 by the Portuguese Álvaro Caminha, it developed around the 16th century cathedral. In 1599 the city and the entire archipelago were conquered by the Dutch for two days and in 1641 for a year. São Tomé was the capital of the colony and is continuously the capital of the country.

The city is located in the north-eastern part of the island of the same name in the Ana Chaves bay and is characterized by decadent Portuguese colonial buildings and well-kept parks and gardens.

From the port there is a ferry service to the island of Prince as well as maritime connections with the Gabon and the Cameroon.
