- 1 Chersonese – Important Greek city of Pont Euxin (Black Sea) founded in Ve century BC AD, in the immediate vicinity of the city of Sebastopol. The Greeks founded other cities in Crimea, notably Feodosia located to the east, towards the Strait of Kerch. From Sebastopol, you can get to the City of Chersones by bus. Although the extent of the site is already very impressive, the excavations are far from over, for lack of resources and political will. The Greeks lived for a long time in Crimea, gradually merging with the Tatars from the east. But with the arrival of Ottomans (who naturally joined the Tatars, of the same origin), the Greeks first had to take refuge in troglodyte cities in the Crimean mountains before the Empress Catherine of Russia offered them a settle in the east, near Mariupol. Since the fall of the Iron Curtain, an estimated 160,000 Greeks have left Mariupol for the Greece.
