Sagiada (Σαγιάδα) is a seaside resort, a former fishing village, in the north of the Thesprotien regional district in the west Epirus.
background
The former independent fishing village Sagiada was added to the parish in 1997 Filiates incorporated and now forms a municipality that, together with the formerly independent villages Asprokklisi, Smertos, Ragio and Kestrini, forms the fertile delta of the Kalamas (or Thiamis) includes.
The place lived from fishing and fish farming (in the north, towards the Albanian border), mandarins and oranges grow in the river delta of the Kalamas, which branches off into the Adriatic Sea, and cattle are raised.
The place with Byzantine roots was taken over by the Venetians from Corfu from as a port on the Greek mainland conquered and expanded. Soon the despot of Ioannina tried to bring the port under control, the Venetians took possession of the place again and fought fierce battles with the Turkish Ottomans in the Turkish-Venetian War (1463/79), the place got new masters several times. In 1479 the place finally came under Ottoman rule, the Venetian bastion was razed. Under Ottoman rule, the place retained some importance as a western Greek port (traffic with Corfu), through which the exchange of goods Ioannina, Trikala and Larisa took place. After the end of the Venetian - Turkish war with the Peace of Passarowitz, the Venetians briefly took over power again until Ali Pascha took over the place for the Ottomans resp. secured his empire around Ioannina.
In 1823 the place was badly hit by an earthquake, the church of Agios Georgios was restored in 1833, until the place was then practically completely destroyed in another earthquake in 1872.
In 1950, the first houses of the new Sagiada were built near the beach and the harbor basin and the drainage of the Kalamas Delta enabled citrus fruit cultivation.
