Background
The word Saguenay dates back to the 16th century, when Jacques Cartier deported a Native American, the head of Canada, Donnacona, to France to present it to King François I. Once in France, Donnacona learned of the value of gold and the market for animal skins in Europe and, to return to Canada, invented the existence of a "seventh city of gold in North America ": Sagana. From the name of this invented city comes the name of the Canadian region. Donnacona died in France in 1536.
