A celebration at Ilia Chavchavadze's estate in Saguramo, date unknown

Ilia Chavchavadze (1837-1907) was one of the founders of the modern Georgian national consciousness in the 19th century, which consciously tried to differentiate itself from Russian rule. He was strongly influenced by the national movements in the multiethnic states of Europe at the time and, as an author and celebrity, used his influence to bring these ideals to Georgia.

His residence was converted into a museum in 1951 and has been run by the Ministry of Culture and Monument Protection since 2005. The villa gives a good impression of the life of Georgia's cultural elite at the end of the 19th century. The upper floor shows numerous private objects of Chavchavadze as exhibits, such as items of clothing - his top hat from his student days, for example - and walking sticks. That Tschawtschawadze also valued German culture can be seen from the furnishings in his study. On the portable reading table is an edition of the book “The Georgian People”, written by Arthur Leist in 1904. Next to the table are two rattan chairs from the Viennese company Thonet from the late 19th century.

In addition to contemporary, expensive pieces of furniture from European and Georgian production, the basement also displays watercolors by the painter Henryk Hryniewski (1869-1939). The Polish-Georgian painter was inspired by Chavchavadse's poems and painted scenes from them.

The museum is very well attended by Georgian standards, almost overcrowded. School classes are regularly brought in by bus. The exhibits are very well prepared, but not all exhibits are described in English. A guided tour is included in the entry price of two Lari, but small groups cannot be supervised in the event of a crowd.

The museum stands in the large garden, which is an attraction in itself. A well-maintained recreational area that invites you to go for a walk and, in good weather, offers a great view of the Caucasus. Free wine tastings are sometimes held in front of the villa, and the anteroom of the villa can also be rented for celebrations.

  • entry: 3 lari to the museum (reduced 1 lari), free entry to the garden
  • opening hours: Tue - Sun 10 a.m. - 6 p.m., closed on Mondays.
