Saint Vincent and the Grenadines is an island nation in the chain of the Lesser Antilles in the Caribbean Sea, in the region of North America.

overview

This 389 km² territory includes the main island of Saint Vincent and much of the northern Grenadines. In the past, during a long time from the 18th century to the second half of the 20th century, this place was a former British colony. It was not until 1979 that the island nation was granted its independence. Today, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines are members of many international organizations such as the Commonwealth and the Caribbean Community.

History

The Caribbean settled on the island of St. Vincent from before the arrival of Europeans. The island still has many ancient Caribbean artifacts. The island, discovered by Cristoforo Colombo in 1498, was contested by Britain and France, becoming a British colony through the Treaty of Paris 1763. In 1773, the island was divided between the British and the Caribs, but conflicts still remained. persistently prolonged. In 1776, the Caribbean rebelled and was defeated. Later, British colonialists expelled them to the islands in the Gulf of Honduras, and brought thousands of African slaves to develop sugarcane plantations.

The island was part of the Union of West Indies from 1958 until the Union was dissolved in 1962, gained independence in 1979. La Soufrière volcano eruptions (1979), then hurricane Allen (1980) causing serious damage to the economy, especially the banana harvest.

The economy began to recover in the 1990s with the development of the tourism industry.

In 1996, St. Vincent and the Grenadines and the United States signed an agreement that allows US Federal Police officers to track down drug traffickers in US waters and provide extradition.

Politic

Saint Vincent and the Grenadines is a parliamentary democracy and constitutional monarchy with Queen Elizabeth II as head of state, bearing the title Queen of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. The Queen is represented in the country by the Court of Justice Sir Frederick Ballantyne.

The Governor-General had primarily ceremonial functions including opening meetings of parliament and appointing various government officials. Control of the government rests with the directly elected Prime Minister and has the power to appoint positions in his cabinet. The current Prime Minister is Ralph Gonsalves.

Economy

The national economy is mainly based on the cultivation and export of bananas, coconuts, crops that provide spices and flavorings. Industry includes mining (sand, gravel) and manufacturing (powder, tobacco and rum). Sea fishing also plays an important role. Tourism develops in the Northern Islands (Grenadines).

The agricultural sector is dominated by banana production, which is the most important sector of the economy. The service sector, which relies heavily on a developed tourism industry, is also important. The government introduced several new industries without success, and the unemployment rate continued to soar as high as 22%. The continued dependence on a single crop representing the whole economy is the biggest obstacle to the economic development of this island nation.

The tourism industry has significant growth potential. The fact that the famous movie Pirates of the Caribbean was filmed on this island nation has helped the country's tourism industry develop. Recent GDP growth has been stimulated by strong activity in the construction sector and improvement in the tourism sector.

By air

The largest airport is E.T. Joshua airport just outside the capital of Kingstown. Most flights in and out are relatively local, mainly to nearby islands such as Canouan, St Lucia, Barbados, and Saint Kitts. A new international airport is under construction and is expected to be completed in 2015, at which point ET Joshua will be decommissioned.

By boat

The islands have many harbors and bays, including two large enough to accommodate a cruise ship. Even so, very few cruises stop in the country and the majority of visitors arrive in the country by plane or yacht.

Go

The island is relatively small, but the mountainous landscape makes travel difficult. The main highway runs along the coast and as such it is necessary to drive around the entire island to get from one side of the island to another. On public transport the island is served by a large number of private vans that act as a bus service. Cars have an "H" at the top of their license plate, which means they are "for hire." The cost to ride is EC$1. Many of them have graphics on the front. Driving is on the left.
