Salinas is a city ofEcuador, located in the coastal region.
To know
Salinas is a modern seaside resort located on the slender peninsula of Santa Elena which forms the western end of theEcuador continental.
Salinas is nicknamed the "Capital of the Sun" for its dry climate, typical of the savannah and is considered the most important seaside resort in the country. The city is part of a metropolitan area of 170,342 inhabitants, called La Puntilla which includes the neighboring centers of La Libertad and Santa Elena, as well as a number of villages.
Its origins date back to the nineteenth century, but it is only from the second half of the twentieth century that it has shown an accelerated demographic growth that has transformed it from an insignificant village dedicated to the extraction of salt into an urban center of some importance. This rapid transformation was due to the tourism industry but today other activities such as fishing and trading are also developed there. Salinas is nowadays a very fashionable and not cheap seaside resort. It presents itself to the visitor with the typical appearance of a North American city. Tall buildings sprout like mushrooms on its shoreline.
The US site Kiplinger put Salinas on a list of the best places to retire once you reach retirement age.
The peninsula of Santa Elena was inhabited since ancient times by pre-Columbian peoples who had developed notable civilizations, known as Valdivia culture (3500-1800 BC) and Huancavilca culture o Manteña (500 A.D.-1533 A.D.)
Of the numerous archaeological finds discovered by chance or following archaeological excavations, the one that most struck the collective imagination was a pair of skeletons called Los Amantes de Sumpa, kept in the museum of the same name.
