Es-sallum (also Sollum, Arabic:السلوم, as-Sallūm) is a small town on the egyptianMediterranean coast close to the border with Libya and is about 200 kilometers from Marsā Maṭrūḥ and 145 kilometers from the Libyan Tobruk away.
background
The place has been inhabited since at least Roman times. They built the port city here Baraniswhich also had several wells.
In 1927, the British and Italians established the current border between Egypt and Libya.
The place was also the scene of armed conflicts. During the Second World War, large parts of the Mediterranean coast of Libya and Egypt were the scene of fighting. On September 9, 1940, nearby Italian forces began to conquer the north coast of Egypt with air raids against British, Commonwealth and the Free French Armed Forces. The battle ended without result on September 16, 1940. As a result, the village is a transit area for the armed forces. The 1977 Libyan-Egyptian War was also fought near the village.
The village hit the headlines once again: It was the destination of numerous expeditions that wanted to experience a total solar eclipse here on March 29, 2006. The village has been spruced up for this, and there is now a hotel here.
The local residents are mostly Bedouin. In 2006 there were 8,445 inhabitants.[1]
