The city occupies the northern part of the Sallanches basin, a large glacial plain crossed by the Arve and bordered by the Aravis massif, the Mont-Blanc massif and the Faucigny massif. It is dominated among others by the summit of the Four Heads. This vast basin with slightly steep slopes contrasts with the high peaks that surround it. Dedicated mainly to agriculture and tourism (lakes and campsites), it is also home to the municipalities of Domancy, Passy and Saint-Gervais-les-Bains.

The climate is mountainous there because of the presence of the Alpine Massif, it is hot and humid in summer but cold or very cold in winter. Indeed, summer is hot and stormy, precipitation is highest during the summer period. Temperatures vary on average from 15 to 26 ° C. Winters are cold due to the proximity of mountain ranges, average temperatures are -3 to 6 ° C. Snow sometimes falls in large quantities.

To go

By plane

Sallanches has a small tourist aerodrome at the Ilettes leisure center. On the other hand, it is located less than 65 km from the international airport of Geneva-Cointrin, less than 70 km from the airportAnnecy-Haute-Savoie, and finally less than 200 km from the international airport of Lyon St-Exupéry.

By train

Sallanches is served by the Sallanches-Combloux-Megève SNCF station, located on the St-Gervais-Genève-Annecy line. The network TER allows regular and daily journeys to St-Gervais, Cluses-La Roche-Genève and Annecy, and direct journeys (on weekends and during school holidays) to Paris by TGV.

The city remains poorly connected to a public transport network, apart from the rail network and the inter-urban departmental network (local lines Lihsa Sallanches-Le Fayet, Sallanches-Praz sur Arly, Sallanches-Cordon, Sallanches-Cluses, etc. )

By bus

By car

Sallanches is served by the motorway A40 Mâcon-Chamonix, allowing the Sallanchards to reach Annecy or Geneva in less than 50 min, and Lyon or Grenoble in less than two hours. Sallanches is connected to the national motorway network (connection A40-A41, A40-A6, ...). Until 2009, Sallanches only had half an interchange, preventing the population from traveling by motorway towards Chamonix, a source of regular congestion in the city. The interchange has now been complete since early September 2009, allowing a direct Sallanches-Chamonix motorway link.

The city is crossed by two former national roads, departmentalized since 2006 as part of the transfer of skills from the national road network to the departments: the RD 1212 (ex-RN212) Sallanches-Albertville, and the RD 1205 (ex-RN205) Bonneville -Chamonix.

Circulate

By bike

The Sallanchard cycle network remains underdeveloped, and does not connect the neighboring towns. On the other hand, within the city, it serves all schools.

To see

Castles

  • 1 Disonche Castle  – Former defensive tower built in the 13th century just behind the town church, we can still see on its north facade a period loophole, proof of its military vocation. With a monumental 4-sided roof before the 15th century, it served over the centuries as a residence for Judge Mage, then more recently as a wool drying room at the time when the Henry family operated the Sallanches woolen mills (in the 19th century). ). This building, one of the oldest, if not the oldest in Sallanches, was one of the few not to be destroyed during the fire of 1840. The tower of Disonche (which also bore the name of Château Pissard or de Château d'Isonche), remained a second home in the 20th century. Now owned by the George family, it is currently undergoing rehabilitation.
  • 2 Rubins Castle  – Former 14th century stately home, it houses the Center de la nature montagnarde, on 600 m2 display and 5 levels. It offers a didactic course allowing the discovery of the mountain natural heritage of Haute-Savoie. From a global approach of several natural environments, we discover the landscapes and geology that constitute it as well as the animals and plants that live there.
