Salta is the capital of the homonymous province in the north-west Argentina. The old colonial city is one of the most popular travel destinations in Argentina, particularly because of its well-preserved baroque old town, in which new buildings are in harmony with the old ones, and as a starting point for tours into the very attractive surroundings.
The city has about 460,000 inhabitants and is located on the eastern edge of the Voranden in the green Valle de Lermathat is shaped by agriculture.

background
Salta was established in 1582 as a trading and military post on the way between Lima and the one that has just been founded Buenos Aires founded. It owes its rapid rise to one of the most important cities in the region to agriculture, so it was the main supply point for the silver city located in a barren high desert Potosí in today's Bolivia.
In the 19th century, when Potosí went downhill, Salta also fell back into insignificance. This changed around 1900 with the connection to the railway network, which was able to reposition the area as a productive agricultural area. Today the city is still dependent on agriculture, even if industry and services, especially trade and tourism, have formed a second pillar since around 1950. In the last decades of the 20th century the city experienced explosive growth: from 115,000 inhabitants in 1960 to around 460,000 in 2001. Today it is one of the fastest growing cities in the country.
Even if Salta is considered a "rich enclave" in the rather poor north-west region, the inequality is also very great here. In addition to the villa-like residences in the suburb of summer visitors San Lorenzo there are also some slums.
