Via the International Airport at Medan.

From Medan or via Berastagi or via Pomalang Biantar along the main road across Sumatra to Parapat.By ferry from parapat or via a dam on the western side of Lake Toba.

Car ferries run from parapat to the island.
Travel around
A coastal road runs around the island. The center of the island is quite mountainous. There are not many roads there, certainly no through routes.

- The Batak villages, with traditional houses on stilts and ancient objects carved from one stone:
- tomok350 year old stone sarcophagi
- ambarita, stone tables and thrones.
- simanindo
- On Samosir, performances with man-sized dolls are regularly given, accompanied by gamelan music.
