Context
Since 800 B.C. the Mayans settled in this territory and developed the cultures known as Chenes, Puuc and Río Bec. In 1531 Francisco de Montejo founded the Villa de Salamanca de Campeche and in 1540, his son erected the Villa de San Francisco de Campeche. From the 16th century, Campeche was the target of pirate attacks, a fact that forced its inhabitants to build forts, bastions and walls around the city. The city of Campeche has a colonial air with towers, bastions and walls. The traveler can discover its attractions on board "El Guapo" and the "Tranvía de la Ciudad", replicas of old vehicles.
