background

Sanctuary of Padre Pio de Pietrelcina

The name of the city is derived from John the Baptist (ital .: San Giovanni Battista), who is also the city's patron saint. It is reported that a statue of this saint was put up by the Lombards in a round temple on the site of the present-day city.

But the reason for today's pilgrimages is the one born on May 25, 1887 Padre Pio da Pietrelcina, whose real name was Francesco Forgione, who died in this city on September 23, 1968. He is Italy's most popular saint, he was canonized in 2002. It is reported from him that as early as 1918 he showed the wounds of Christ. In the following years he became famous as a faith healer and prophet.

At the beginning of March 2008, his body was exhumed and, after being preserved, put on display in a glass coffin. The opening of the coffin operated by the Capuchin monks also met with rejection because it was viewed as desecrating the grave.
