The town San Luis lies in the west Argentina in the so-called Monte-Landscape. She often will punta (Spanish tip) because it is at the southwest tip of the Sierra de San Luis is the one of the same name province shapes.
From a poor, administrative small town, San Luis rose in the 1980s and 1990s to a lively small industrial metropolis. This is mainly due to the tax relief laws of the last military dictatorship for backward regions, which attracted productive businesses, but also many letterbox companies. Today San Luis is a modern city with good infrastructure, but few sights, and has about 150,000 inhabitants.
background
The city was founded twice in 1594 and 1632, but for a long time it was a rather insignificant trading post along the route Buenos Aires and Santiago de Chile. Around 1900 it only had 7,000 inhabitants.
The modern San Luis is inseparable from family Rodríguez Saá connected. This clan of politicians, who have ruled the province without interruption since the advent of democracy in 1983, is not without controversy: corruption and nepotism are said to be there. On the other hand, the city enjoys a very good economic situation. So was 2003 with La Punta a high-tech neighborhood north of the city to combine research centers, modern social neighborhoods with broadband internet access, universities, an eco-cultural center, event centers and other amenities.
For travelers, the city is primarily of interest as a starting point for the delightful valleys of the Sierras de San Luis. There are reservoirs and deep gorges in the metropolitan area just a few kilometers from the center.
