San Pedro (Belize) is a city on Ambergris Caye in the Belize District in Belize.
background
When the box war in Mexico raged, a group of mestizo refugees ended up here and they founded the city of San Pedro. They first grew logwood for the dye industry and later produced chicle for the production of chewing gum. When the economic crisis heralded the end of chicle production in 1930, people remembered the good old coconuts, the harvest of which increasingly formed the livelihood of the islanders. Between 1942 and 1955, the coconut plantations were severely damaged by hurricanes several times. During this period, the lobster established itself as the basis of life. But that changed radically in 1965 when the first hotel was opened. Since then, tourism has been responsible for a steadily increasing share of per capita income. Today there is hardly a city in Belize that has such a large infrastructure to offer. This place is especially popular with American tourists.
getting there
By plane
The 1 San Pedro Airport is located in the middle of the city and is only served by the small domestic airlines Maya Island Air[1] and Tropic Air[2] approached. The latter is based at the airport. They each have less than 10 twin-engine small planes that fly up and down the coast of Belize.
The next international airports are in Belize City and Chetumal relatively close, but are relatively rarely served internationally. Of Belize City there is then a direct flight connection to San Pedro. who of Chetumal also has to cross the border to get from Corozal to get to San Pedro by plane.
In the street
There is no road connection with the mainland.
By boat
There are boat connections with Corozal, Sarteneja and Chetumal, Mexico (approx. 80USD round trip, 50USD one way).
