Saumur is to the west of France in the department Maine-et-Loire in the region Pays de la Loire.

background

Saumur was built under the protection of a castle on the banks of the Loire. The city belonged to the county of Blois before it came to the county of Anjou in 1026. Saumur developed into an important trading center in the Anjou province. Anjou and with it Saumur became a French crown domain as early as 1204. In the 16th century, until the end of the Edict of Nantes, the place was a spiritual center of the Huguenots, who then left the city and plunged Saumur into a serious crisis for many years.

On February 1, 1973, Saumur merged with Bagneux, Dampierre-sur-Loire, Saint-Hilaire-Saint-Florent and Saint-Lambert-des-Levées. These five cities make up the Saumur agglomeration.
