Story

The origin of the city can be found in the two Latin names "Salva Tierra", which means Saved Land giving the name "saved". The purpose of the rescues was to bring together the population to ensure their protection under the clergy. The Medieval City of Sauveterre was to experience great prosperity in the region. XIIe to XVIe centuries thanks to two great viscounts of Béarn, Gaston VII Moncade in the 13the century, and Gaston III de Foix de Béarn, better known under the name of Fébus, in the XIVe century. The stone ramparts and most of the fortifications will be built or reinforced (St André Church, Tour Monréal, Pont de la Légende, Viscount castle, etc.). During this prosperous period, Sauveterre became one of the main boroughs of Béarn with Orthez, Morlaàs and Oloron-Sainte-Marie. Let us not forget also, that from the XIe century, Sauveterre-de-Béarn has seen pilgrims from Compostela taking the Vézelay route, who helped enrich the city. The XVIe century will mark the end of this happy period. In 1523 first of all, Sauveterre undergoes the passage of the Spaniards to the reconquest of Navarre, then in 1569, Jeanne d'Albret, mother of King Henri IV, will establish Protestantism in Béarn, source of conflict with the very Catholic Basques on the other side of the Gave. The city is experiencing numerous degradations which leave it bruised and make it lose its strategic role.
