Navarrenx is also renowned for being a hotspot for salmon fishing. This king of the Gave is part of the heritage. Fished since the dawn of time, it was, from the end of XIXe century, the object of intense sport fishing practiced by Lords vacationing in our region. Salmon is fished in these specific places called "Pools", calm part of the Gave, between two currents, where it rests before continuing its journey upstream. To help him in this "upstream", the men have built "salmon ladders" which allow him to cross the steep drop in the dikes. In Navarrenx, this ladder was fitted out in the old passelis, at the Masseys pool: a legendary pool with its memorable past. The fishing festival celebrated at Pentecost is one of the highlights of Navarrenx.
