security

The dangers in the Schanfigg correspond to those in the Swiss Alps. On mountain tours you always have to be prepared for weather changes, in the spring and autumn months there can be onset of winter with unexpected snowfall.

When planning ski tours, it is important to study the avalanche bulletin posted at the ski and chairlift stations and to cancel planned tours if necessary. There is generally no avalanche / slab risk on the marked slopes of the ski areas, slopes on risky slopes are closed. It goes without saying that closed pistes may not be used.

Drivers have to prepare for the wintry conditions in the winter months, the streets are often narrow and somewhat exposed. From late autumn onwards, winter tires and snow chains are a must, to mount the snow chains you have to find a parking space (and have already practiced at home), otherwise it is easier to take the train or the post bus. As everywhere in Graubünden, people like to see slow vehicles pull out briefly at a parking lot and let the column forming behind them pass by; this also applies to slow, heavy motorhomes or caravan teams. If you don't know a long column behind you, you can also rather enjoy the landscape.

climate

In the alpine climate, the onset of winter and snowfall can be expected from mid-October and in spring to April / May, the weather forecasts for the canton of Graubünden are difficult to make, but those from Meteo Schweiz are usually quite reliable. Before starting a mountain tour, it is worth taking a look at the rain radar, including the forecast data.
