The Bay Sharm el-Luli, Arabic:شرم اللولي‎, Sharm al-Lūlī, „al-Lūlī Bay", also Sharm el-Luliya or Ḥankūrāb Beach (Hankorab Beach) is located on the egyptianRed Sea Coast about 56 kilometers south-southeast of Marsā ʿAlam and is part of the Wādī-el-Gimāl-Ḥamāṭa National Parks. The bay is considered to be one of the most beautiful beaches with almost untouched underwater world in Egypt.

background

Sharm el-Lūlī

The Bay 1 Sharm el-Lūlī is part of the Wādī-el-Gimāl-Ḥamāṭa National Parks. That is why it enjoys increased protection, and there is no tourist infrastructure anywhere - no hotels, no loungers, no toilets.

The bay is about halfway from Marsā ʿAlam to Berenike and is located six kilometers southeast of the entrance to the Wādī el-Gimāl, the valley of the camels, or from Cape Raʾs Baghdādī.

The bay is about 1200 meters long from west to east, widens to the west and reaches a width of 730 meters at the west end. The beach at this point is sandy and largely flat. Its width only depends on the tide. The north side of the bay protrudes a little further into the Red Sea than the south side and offers some protection from strong winds. The water is clear as long as the sand is not thrown up by strong winds or fins from snorkelers or divers. To the west, behind the sandy beach, the area turns into a stony desert area.

This bay usually gets high ratings on travel portals, which is certainly due to its seclusion and the protected location in a national park.

getting there

The journey is via the coastal road 11 from Marsā ʿAlam or from the hotel complexes in the south of the city that go up to Ḥamāṭa and Berenike rich, possible. Organized excursions to this bay are often offered in the hotels.

When you leave the bay you will find extensive coral reefs on both the north and even more on the south side. The bay drops here up to 20 meters deep. Hard and soft corals, including anemones, can be found in the reefs.

The underwater world includes clown fish, napoleons, puffer fish, butterfly fish and turtles, including hawksbill turtles.

activities

  • Swimming, bathing. There is a mostly flat white sand beach that continues into a shallow and sandy stretch of water.
  • Diving and snorkeling. The fairly intact underwater world is certainly the highlight of the visit. An underwater camera should not be missing.

kitchen

There are no restaurants on site. This can be found in Marsā ʿAlam or in the hotels in the south of the city. Food and drinks must be brought along. A cooler bag is very useful. Remnants are not allowed to remain on site.

accommodation

There are no accommodations on site. This can be found in Marsā ʿAlam or in the south of the city.

health

Solar radiation is very high all year round, even in winter. You should therefore bring enough sunscreen, including sunglasses and hat, as well as drinking water, mats and sturdy shoes. A t-shirt is even appropriate when snorkeling.

behaviour rules

There are a few rules of conduct for travelers, because the natural beauties are fragile, and the sight of non-rotting souvenirs of modern times is not exactly edifying either.

  • The most important principle is to leave the book as you found it. Later travelers want to enjoy the same experience.
  • Take all the rubbish with you and don't leave it lying around. Even matches, cigarettes, paper and vegetable waste take up to a year to rot.
  • Intervene as little as possible in the flora and fauna. Do not collect or destroy any plants or animals. Leave the underwater world untouched. There is an absolute ban on fishing.
  • Leave everything where it is. This also applies to rocks, minerals and fossils.
