Silesia - Schlesien

Silesia is a historical region in Central Europe, which, according to today's political borders, lies partly in Poland, Germany and the Czech Republic. Traditionally it is in a northwestern (Lower Silesia) and a south-eastern part (Upper Silesia) structured. Silesia is divided into the following regions today (or parts of it):

  • Silesia (Voivodeship)(Polish: Śląskie), Polish administrative unit - the eastern part of Upper Silesia; Capital Katowice
  • Opole (Voivodeship)(Polish: Opolskie), Polish administrative unit - the western part of Upper Silesia; Capital Opole
  • Lower Silesia (Voivodeship)(Polish: Dolnośląskie), Polish administrative unit - the greater part of Lower Silesia; Wroclaw capital
  • part of the Polish Voivodeship Lebus(Polish: Lubuskie) - the northernmost part of Lower Silesia, including with the cities of Zielona Góra (Grünberg), Żagań (Sagan) and Nowa Sól (Neusalz)
  • part of the region Upper Lusatia in the Free State of Saxony, among others with the cities of Görlitz, Hoyerswerda, Weißwasser, Niesky and Rothenburg / O.L.
  • a small part of the region Lower Lusatia in the state of Brandenburg, among others the city of Ruhland
  • part of the region Moravia and Silesia in the Czech Republic, including with the towns of Bruntál, Jeseník, Karviná, Opava and parts of Ostrava and Frýdek-Mistek
