Ostrava (German: Ostrau) is an industrial city at the transition from North Moravia to Silesia. It is the third largest city in the Czech Republic in terms of population.
background
Ostrava is on the Moravian Gate, the watershed between the catchment area of the Or and the Danube and thus the drainage system of the Baltic Sea and the Black Sea (European main watershed). This formed the traditional border between the countries of Moravia and Silesia, which is why there were two cities until 1941: Moravian Ostrava and Silesian Ostrava. They were united during the German occupation.
From the discovery of coal seams around 1763, the North Moravian industrial area, the center of which was Ostrava, developed similarly Ruhr area or that Upper Silesian District a major mining and heavy industry area. Until well into the 20th century, the city was one of the industrial engines of Czechoslovakia, but was therefore also affected by massive environmental pollution and destruction. After the collapse of the Eastern Bloc, however, the sales markets for Ostrauer coal and steel also disappeared. The region is now going through structural change, which is proving difficult, which is why unemployment is well above the national average.

By plane
- Ostrava Leoš Janáček Airport. Regional airport with scheduled flights from Prague (Czech Airlines) and London Stansted (Ryanair). In addition, there are seasonal charter flights to holiday destinations, but no direct flights from German-speaking countries.
- There is a larger selection of scheduled flights to the airports Katowice (approx. 115 km) and Krakow (approx. 155 km) in neighboring Poland. The company offers from both airports Tiger Express Minibus shuttles to Ostrava (Katowice: six times a day, travel time two hours; Krakow: four times a day, travel time just under three hours)
By train
There are two train stations in the city that all international long-distance trains meet: Ostrava-Svinov in the west of the city and Ostrava hl.n. (Hauptbahnhof) near the center. Direct trains include out Prague, Brno, Vienna, Warsaw and Katowice available.
From Vienna you need to take the EuroCity or express train Czech railway 2:50 hours; from Prague with the SuperCity just under three hours, with the cheaper IC or Ex approx. 3:20 hours. From Dresden it takes 5½ hours with a change in Prague, from Berlin a good 7½ hours. The journey time from Munich via Vienna is just under 7½ hours.
In addition to the Czech Railways, the private railway companies also operate REGIOJET and LEO Express both stations in Ostrava and provide, among other things, a connection to the Slovakia for sure. Fares can be cheaper compared to Czech Railways.
By bus
- Of Krakow and Krakow Airport there is a daily ČD bus to Ostrava (travel time approx. 2:15 hours). He arrives on the forecourt of the Ostrava railway station hl.n. at. This is much faster than taking the train and saves you having to change trains in Katowice.
- Runs between Prague and Ostrava FlixBus with a travel time of just over 5 hours without changing trains. There are also direct connections to Vienna (4:20 hours). These buses stop in the forecourt of the Ostrava train station hl.n.

There is an extensive one in Ostrava Tram network with 17 lines and a total route length of 62.7 km. There are also several bus and trolleybus lines. Suburbs and the surrounding area are made possible by the suburban railway network Esko (similar to an S-Bahn) served.

Ticket machines can be found at many road and bus stops, but they usually only accept coins (CZK). With a Czech SIM card you can still buy SMS tickets: 70 minutes (30 CZK, € 1.15) or 1 day (80 CZK, € 3.07).
- In addition to the aforementioned options for purchasing paper and SMS tickets, there is also the option of paying by credit card (VISA / Mastercard with NFC), especially on trams. A distinction is made between tickets with transfer options (Elektronická přestupní, Valid for 45 minutes, CZK 20, € 0.77) and tickets without transfer options (Elektronická nepřestupní, Valid for 10 minutes, CZK 14, € 0.54). To do this, the card must be held up to the terminal at the start of the journey and when it ends. The entire booking is made without a receipt or paper ticket.

- Cathedral of the Divine Savior (Katedrála Božského Spasitele). From the 1880s, neo-renaissance style.
Castles, chateaus and palaces
- Silesian-Ostrava Castle. From the 13th century, on a rock above the Ostravice, today a museum and cultural center.
- Remains of the Premyslid castle Landek u Petřkovic, west of the Petřkovice district on the easternmost elevation of the Sudeten. The hill on which it stands is a nature reserve and site of a 30,000-year-old Stone Age mammoth hunter settlement.
