As a result of the centuries of coal exploitation, nature in and around Katowice has been damaged. Due to the closings of mines, pollution has decreased, but unemployment has also increased significantly in the 1990s. In the meantime, however, numerous companies have settled in Katowice and the city is one of the economically strongest and, with numerous skyscrapers, most modern in Poland.
