Zgorzelec is a city in the west of the polish Voivodeship Lower Silesia at the mouth of the Wittig in the Lusatian Neisse. It is sister city of Gorlitz.

The city was created in 1945 by separating the parts of Görlitz that lie east of the Neisse. Today the city has about 31,000 inhabitants.

By train

Of Dresden you can take the Trilex-Express in the direction of Wroclaw directly to Zgorzelec three times a day (early in the morning, noon and in the evening), the journey takes about 1:20 hours. Otherwise there is a connection every two hours via Gorlitz. There is a connection to regional trains in the direction of Jelenia Góra, which reach Zgorzelec station in 4 minutes. In total, it takes around 1½ hours from Dresden and 45 minutes from Bautzen.

Of cottbus there is also a connection with the East German Railway via Görlitz every two hours, which takes 1:40 hours. It takes a good three hours from Berlin to change trains in Cottbus and Görlitz.

From the Polish side, Zgorzelec can be reached three times a day directly Wroclaw (Travel time 2:10 to 2:25 hours) about Legnica (1:25 hours). Other connections from Wroclaw require a change in Węgliniec or Legnica, but the journey time is almost the same thanks to coordinated transfer times.

There are other connections within Poland every two hours with the regional Koleje Dolnośląskie (KD) trains Jelenia Góra, the journey takes 1:40 hours. A regional train leaves three times a day Zielona Góra (2:25 hours), once a day Zagan (2 hours).

By bus

The bus line P the Transport company Görlitz runs Mon-Fri hourly (from 6.30 a.m. to 5.30 p.m.), on weekends only six times a day, from the Görlitz train station and Demianiplatz in the old town across the border to Zgorzelec, where, among other things, stops at the cultural center (memorial hall), at the bus station, on Langiewicza street and at the Zgorzelec Miasto train station. The final stop is at the Real market. The journey from Görlitz train station to the Zgorzelec cultural center takes 12 minutes. The ZVON Euro-Neisse tickets are valid. Timetable

Flixbus offers direct long-distance bus connections from Warsaw (7½ hours) and Wroclaw (2:45 hours, only at night) to Zgorzelec. The bus stop is at the bus station, ul. Dąbrowskiego 4 (near St. Boniface Church). If you want to travel by long-distance bus from the German side, you have to go to Görlitz (stop at the train station) and then cross the border by city bus line P, regional train or on foot (a good 2 km).

In the street

Zgorzelec is located on the Polish A4 motorway (Breslau – Dresden), which is a continuation of the German A4 (Dresden – Görlitz).

From the German sister city you can simply walk over one of the Neisse bridges to Zgorzelec: Either over the old town bridge, which was restored in 2003-04 and is only open to pedestrians and cyclists; or one kilometer further south over the bridge of friendship between the City Park / City Hall Görlitz and Park Andrzeja Błachańca / Kulturhaus Zgorzelec.

If you want to hike far, you can take the Ecumenical Pilgrimage in Central Germany along the medieval Via Regia (Part of Way of St. James) come here from Bautzen, Leipzig or even Erfurt.
