The polishHighwayAutostrada A4 is one of the most important east-west connections in Central Europe. It follows the medieval Hohe Straße Via Regia Together with the German Federal motorway 4 it forms part of the European route E40. It leads from Jędrzejowice / Ludwigsdorf on the German border via large cities such as Legnica, Wroclaw, Opole, Gliwice, Katowice, Krakow, Tarnów, Rzeszów and Przemyśl to Korczowa on the Ukrainian border. At Gleiwitz she crosses the autobahn Autostrada A1going in a south-north direction from Jastrzębie-Zdrój to Danzig runs.
background
The A4 has a long history. Its western section was already planned at the time of the German Reich and from 1936 a short section was built near Breslau. The Second World War interrupted the expansion, which could only be completed in the Third Polish Republic. Today the A4 has been completely expanded, so that you can drive continuously on the A4 from the German to the Ukrainian border.
In Poland there is no vignette requirement for cars under 3.5 tons. However, there are some toll points around Wroclaw and between Katowice and Krakow. So you currently have to pay 2 x10 zloty (2x approx. 2.50 euros) in Wroclaw and once 16.20 zloty (approx. 4 euros) in Krakow. This can be done in cash or with a credit card. Vehicles with a total weight of more than 3.5 tonnes must carry a box with them and also pay a toll on the toll-free sections. The rest areas are all very spacious, well-kept and clean.
