Both were destroyed during the German occupation in World War II. The former Gothic town hall is now in the Renaissance style and houses a regional museum. The Diocesan Museum on Cathedral Square is housed in a house from the early 16th century.

The chemical company was established here in the interwar period Tarnów-Mościce nitrogen works founded from which the Grupa Azoty emerged.

The remains of the synagogue and the large Jewish cemetery in the northeast of the city are reminiscent of the formerly large number of Jewish residents in Tarnów. On the square under the oak a memorial commemorates the deportation of the Jewish population from the Tarnów Ghetto to the extermination camp Bełżec. Tarnów is also known for the Gypsy Festival, which takes place here every June and where thousands of Sinti and Roma from all over Poland meet. The Ethnographic Museum in Tarnów commemorates the fate of this population group during the Nazi era.

In 1975 the city became the capital of the eponymous Voivodeship and 1992 Tarnów to Diocese seat raised.
