Nowy Sącz(German: New Sandez) is a city in the voivodeship Lesser Poland in the Sandezer Basin between Sandets Beskids, Island Beskids, Gorce and Pienines at the confluence of the Dunajec and the Kamienica not far from the older one Stary Sącz.

The settlement in the place of today's city was originally called Kamienica. In 1292 the place was re-established and Nowy Sącz called in contrast to older Stary Sącz. Nowy Sącz surpassed Stary Sącz on the trade route to Hungary in the following centuries. In 1297 the Franciscans came to Nowy Sącz and founded their monastery here. At the beginning of the 14th century Nowy Sącz received town charter. A Gothic royal castle was built here around 1350. In 1554 Nowy Sącz received the stacking right. In the 16th century the city was a center of the Reformation, the Polish Brothers. In 1610 the Piarist monastery was founded. A year later there was a devastating fire in the city. In 1655 the place was occupied by Swedish troops, but they were driven out by citizens in the same year. After the first partition of Poland in 1770/1772, the place became part of the new Kingdom of Galicia and Lodomeria of the Habsburg Empire. In 1876 the city was connected to the railway network. After the First and Second World War, Nowy Sącz came back to Poland. During the Second World War, the German occupiers deported the city's Jewish residents to the concentration camp Bełżec.

The medieval townscape has largely been preserved, here is the second largest market square in Lesser Poland (after Krakow). The pretty town hall dates from the end of the 19th century, some of the town houses around it are even older. The originally Gothic Margaret Church was redesigned in the 19th century. There is a regional museum in the neighboring Gothic House. The former synagogue in ul. Berka Joselewicza from 1746 is now used as a gallery for contemporary art. In the northern part of the city are the ruins of a castle from the 14th century. The open-air museum in the Falkowa district shows a collection of typical old cottages, churches and granaries from the region.
