Map of Pieninese

The Pienin National Park lies in the Pieninen in the south-eastern part of Malopolska on the Polish-Slovakian border. Block limestone forms picturesque, almost vertical white walls along the river Dunajecthat breaks through the mountains in a gorge up to 500 m deep. The most famous mountain Trzy Korony (Drei Kronen, 982m) is said to be the most beautiful peak in Poland. The highest peak of the Pieninen, the Wysoka, lies in the small, Małe Pieniny and rises to 1050m. Characteristic for the landscape of the Middle Pienines are the bare rock faces, the isolated rocks. It can be assumed that between 13,000 and 15,000 animal species live here, i.e. half of the Polish fauna. The new species (mainly butterflies and insects) that are unique to this area have also been discovered. The fauna of southern Europe is abundantly represented here. The rarities include the eagle owl, wall creeper, merle, pygmy owl, three-toed woodpecker, black woodpecker and black stork. The largest predator is the lynx. Otters live on the banks of the Dunajec. In the 13th century, the Pieninen Castle, the highest mountain castle in Poland (779 m), was built within today's national park. The ruins can be found not far from the Three Crowns. Two more castles were built on either side of the roads leading along the Dunajec, Czorsztyn and Niedzicawhich are considered to be the most beautifully situated castles in Poland. The main attraction of the park is a raft trip on the Dunajec, one of the biggest tourist attractions in Central Europe. It starts in Sromowce Wyżne or Sromowce Niżne and ends in Szczawnica or Krościenko nad Dunajcem. Given its location, the park has many vantage points that offer a beautiful panorama of the neighboring mountain ranges. The views of the are particularly impressive Tatra Mountains, Gorce and Magura.
