Gorlice (German: Gorlitz) is an old trading town on the river Ropa in the voivodeship Lesser Poland in the southeast Poland at the foot of the Lower Beskids.

The trading city was founded in 1355 by King Kasmir III. founded by the great and given city rights. Settlers were mainly Silesians of German descent, among others from the area around Görlitz. During the Reformation, the city became largely Calvinist. Later the Polish brothers worked. The city was burned several times during the Swedish Wars in the 17th century. In the course of the First Partition of Poland, it came to the Habsburgs. In the early 19th century, the city pioneered the petroleum industry, where the oil lamp was invented and the world's first oil production towers were built. It became Polish again after the First and Second World Wars. Fighting between Russian and Austro-Hungarian units took place here, especially during the First World War. There are numerous military cemeteries around the city.
