Niepołomice is a historical place in Poland in the voivodeship Lesser Poland. The place is east of Krakow on the edge of the Niepołomice Heath and is known for its Renaissance castle.
background
Niepołomice was already a popular hunting spot on the Niepołomice Heath for the early Polish rulers. Niepołomice was around 1350 by Casimir III. the great, who also donated a Gothic church next to his hunting lodge. Among the Jagiellonians who enjoyed hunting, the place rose to become the second capital next to Krakow, as they sometimes spent more time here than on the Krakow Wawel. Niepołomice was also a haven for the royal court when the plague or another epidemic broke out in Kraków. After the First Partition of Poland in 1772, the place came successively to the Habsburgs and in 1867 to the K-and-K monarchy. After the First World War he became Polish again.
The castle goes to Casimir III. the great one who had it built in Gothic style before 1350. It burned down in 1550 and was rebuilt in the Renaissance style by Sigismund II August from 1551 by Santi Gucci. The Queen Mother Bona Sforza had the Renaissance gardens laid out. After the Jagiellonian extinction, the castle passed to several magnate families in succession in the 17th century. Niepołomice was sacked by the Swedes in 1655, but the castle was not destroyed. In the 18th century, the Wettins took over August II the Strong and August III. the lock. Overall, the castle has hardly been changed since the 16th century. Today it serves as a museum, hotel and cultural center.
