Zator is a city in Poland in the southern voivodeship Lesser Poland near Krakow north of the Little Beskids in the Vistula valley. It is best known as the city of fish ponds and the surrounding area as carp land.

background

The city dates back to the 13th century, received town charter in 1292 and from 1315 belonged to the Duchy of Auschwitz and after its division in 1445 it became the capital of the duchy of the same name. The city developed around the market square. With the First Partition of Poland in 1772, Zator came to the Habsburg kingdom of Galicia and Lodomeria, which it remained until the First World War. After the First World War, the city became Polish again. After the German invasion of Poland, the city was immediately incorporated into the Third Reich. In 1945 she came back to Poland.
