Wadowice (German: City of women) is a city in Poland in the southern voivodeship Lesser Poland near Krakow in the Little Beskids. It is primarily the birthplace of Karol Wojtyła, the Archbishop of Cracow and later Pope John Paul II known.

background

The city dates from the 13th century and from 1315 belonged to the Duchy of Auschwitz and after its division in 1445 to the Duchy of Zator. The city developed around the market square. German settlers came to Wadowice in the 14th century and the German name Frawenstat has been guaranteed since approx. 1400. In 1430 it received city rights. With the First Partition of Poland in 1772, Wadowice became part of the Habsburg Kingdom of Galicia and Lodomeria, which remained until the First World War. After the First World War, the city became Polish again. After the German invasion of Poland, the city became part of the Third Reich as "Wadowitz". In 1945 she came back to Poland.
