Rzeszów(IPA: [ˈƷɛʃuf] Please click to listen!) (German: Resche during the Nazi era Reichshof) is a major city as well as the capital of the voivodeship Subcarpathian in the south East Poland. The university town is on that Wisłok, a tributary of the San, at the foot of the Beskydy Mountains (Dynów Mountains). Historically, it belongs to the border area Lesser Poland with the Red Rus (Przemyśler Land) and was owned by the magnate family of the Lubomirskiwho shaped the baroque cityscape to a large extent through their foundations. The area of ​​the old town was already settled in the Seinzeit. In the Middle Ages there were two Slavic castle settlements here, which grew into a town in the High Middle Ages. The present city dates back to the 13th century. It was re-founded in 1354 and granted Magdeburg city rights. During this time, numerous German settlers, the so-called Forest or deaf German, in the area around the city. The Gothic parish church was built until 1363 and the attached parish school until 1406. In the 15th century, the town fell victim to several fires. In the 16th century, Jewish immigrants settled in the northern part of the city. The town hall was built until 1591. In 1772 the city came to the Habsburg Kingdom of Galicia and Lodomeria in the course of the First Partition of Poland, which it remained until the First World War. Here it formed the capital of the Rzeszów district. In 1858 the city was connected to the railway network and with Krakow connected. In the interwar period she was Polish again. The company was founded during this time Zelmer, one of the largest household appliance manufacturers in Central and Eastern Europe. After the German attack on Poland, the city came under the German-occupied General Government. In 1941 the Rzeszów Airport opened for the armed forces.
