background

Grapevines in Buków Mountains

The region emerged from the Rotburgenland, first mentioned in 981, which was controversial between Poland, Hungary, Lithuania and Kiev for centuries. The name goes back to the early 14th century when the area belonged to the Kingdom of Poland. Red Ruthenia was part of the Ruthenian Voivodeship. In the course of the first division of Poland, the Rote Rus came to the Habsburgs in 1772 and became part of the province of Galicia. After the First World War, the Rote Rus became Polish again. After the Second World War, it was divided between Poland and the Soviet Union. After its disintegration, its eastern part is part of Ukraine.
