The place was first mentioned in a document in 1436. In 1470 the place received city rights, but was privately owned by changing magnate families. In the 16th century a Renaissance castle, a parish church and a synagogue were built over the San. In 1657 the city was sacked by the Swedes. In the course of the First Partition of Poland, it came to the Habsburgs. It became Polish again after the First and Second World Wars.
