background

Zamość 1617

Zamość is named after its founder Jan Zamoyski named. He had ordered the Italian architect Bernardo Morando to come to Poland in the 1570s to help him build an ideal city in the spirit of the Italian Renaissance based on the model of Padua. In 1580 Zamość received town charter and in 1589 rose to become the headquarters of the Zamoyskis family entourage. The town's Jewish community can be traced back to 1588. In 1594 a university founded. The time of the city's heyday falls during the Lublin Renaissance era, which has shaped the cityscape to this day. In 1648 and 1656 the fortress was besieged by Kossaken and Sweden without success. However, the Swede succeeded in taking the fortress in the Great Northern War at the beginning of the 18th century. In 1720, a synod of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church took place in Zamość, where important decisions were made to reform the liturgy. After the First Partition of Poland, the city belonged to Austria as part of the Crown Land of Galicia, to the Duchy of Warsaw between 1809 and 1815 and to the Congress Poland, which was under Russian rule, for around 100 years. During this time it was Rosa Luxemburg born here. In the interwar period, the region was almost in the center of Poland. The German occupiers built it in World War II Zamosc ghetto for the Jewish population. In the Action Zamość the Polish majority should be Germanized by German settlers. The Zamoyski magnate family was harassed by the National Socialists and later by the Communists. After the fall of the Wall, Marcin Zamoyski, a member of the family, was mayor from 1990 to 1992, and from 2002 to 2014, and from 1992 to 1994 voivode of the then Zamość Voivodeship. In 1991 the city became the seat of the Diocese of Zamość-Lubaczów.
