background

In the 11th century there was a settlement on one of the hills called Wietrzna Górathat belonged to the Benedictines. In the 12th century, Duke Kazimierz the Just transferred the place to the Premonstratensian Canons, who built it in his honor Kazimierz renamed. The nickname "Dolny" was added later, with reference to the location on the Vistula, to Kazimierz Dolny von Kazimierz at Krakow to distinguish. At the beginning of the 14th century, King Ladislaus Ellenlang donated today's parish church and built the castle. During this time the place received city rights. The road network dates back to the 15th century. In the 16th century the place developed into an important transshipment point for grain shipped down the Vistula. In 1628 the Franciscan nun settled in Kazimierz Dolny and built a monastery. The city began to decline in 1656 when Swedish troops set it on fire and looted it. The partitions of Poland meant a definitive end to the grain trade. Towards the end of the 19th century, with the onset of tourism, a renaissance began for the city, which was now part of the Russian division. Villas and boarding houses for summer visitors were created Warsaw or Lublin. During the Second World War, large parts of the city were destroyed, but the reconstruction of many buildings took place quickly and Kazimierz Dolny was able to increase its tourist importance.
