background

Palace around 1800

The place was first mentioned in 1626. He was successively the residence of the Lubomirski, Sieniawski and Czartoryski. The Czartoryski made their art collection accessible to the public, creating the first public museum in Poland. This is currently located in Krakow and is considered one of the most renowned museums in Central Europe with paintings by Leondardo da Vinci, Rafael and Rembrandt. After the Third Partition of Poland in 1795, the place came successively to Prussia, the Duchy of Warsaw and finally to Congress Poland, which was part of the Russian Empire. After the First World War he became Polish again.

The castle was built in the Baroque style from 1671 by the Dutchman Tylman van Gameren for Stanisław Lubomirski. The castle was looted and burned by the Swedes in 1706. The reconstruction in the Rococo style was carried out by Johann Sigmund Deybel for Elżbieta Sieniawska from 1722. The heyday of the palace and park fell in the late 18th century - from around 1785 - under Izabela Czartoryska. She had the castle rebuilt by Chrystian Piotr Aigner in the classical style. The heyday ended with the November uprising in 1830, when the Czartoryski who supported the uprising had to flee abroad before the tsar. Since then it has been used by state institutions. Most of the art collection is now in Krakow. A small part is exhibited again in the castle.
