background
The castle hill was already settled in the Stone Age. In the early Middle Ages there was a castle wall settlement here. The city of Sandomierz was first mentioned in a document in the 10th century. It became the center and capital of the Duchy of Sandomir. The Cistercians settled here in 1185. In 1226 the Dominicans followed and in 1246 the Poor Clares with their own monasteries. Sandomierz was granted town charter in 1236, and a short time later the staple charter. In 1241 and 1259 the city was sacked by the Tatars. In 1286 the city was re-established under Magdeburg law. king Casimir the Great chartered and expanded the rights of the city in 1366 and expanded the royal palace, in which he resided several times. Since the 14th century, the city has been the seat of several regional and court courts. Also in the 14th century Sandomierz became the capital of the Sandomir Voivodeshipthat emerged from the dissolved duchy. Outside the protective city fortifications, the Michaeliskirche with attached Benedictine monastery, the so-called Reformed monastery and the Dominican monastery were built. There was also a Jewish community in Sandomierz early on, the synagogue of which is on the western city wall in Basztowa Street. The Roman empress persisted in the first half of the 15th century Barbara from Cilli after her escape from Bohemia spent several years in Sandomierz. The flourishing of the trading town began in the 15th century with the grain trade on the Vistula. In addition to the grain trade on the Vistula, handicrafts formed the economic basis of the urban population. The city owes a cultural boom in the 16th century to both of them. During the early modern period, the city was a center of the Reformation in Poland. In 1570 envoys of the Polish Lutherans, Reformed and Bohemian Brothers in Sandomierz agreed on the Consensus Sandomiriensis, an agreement by which they recognized the legality of their respective denominations and committed themselves to mutual support. In 1613 the Jesuits opened a college here. in the Second Northern War Swedish troops took Sandomierz in 1655. A year later, the Battle of Sandomir took place here. After the Swedish King Charles XII. in the Great Northern WarWarsaw and Krakow had conquered the Saxon-Polish king August the Strong retreat with his troops to Sandomierz in 1702. Representatives of noble Polish families who supported King August joined in the Confederation of Sandomir together. The wars of the late Baroque period put an end to the urban heyday. With the partition of Poland at the end of the 18th century, Sandomierz came to the Habsburgs. In 1809 it came to the Grand Duchy of Warsaw during the Napoleonic turmoil and to the Russian Congress Poland after the Congress of Vienna. The former brick Gothic collegiate church in the southern old town was given the rank of cathedral in 1818 Diocese of Sandomierz raised. The city suffered damage during the First World War. In the time of Second Polish Republic Sandomierz was determined to be the center of an industrial area to be created. However, the implementation of the plans was made impossible by the German invasion of Poland. According to plans from the interwar period, Sandomierz should once again become a voivodeship capital with over 100,000 inhabitants. As a result of the Second World War, this project was not carried out either. The Jewish population was locked up in the ghetto established in 1942 and then transferred to a concentration camp Bełżec deported or shot on the spot. During the advance of the Red Army in 1944, the artillery commander Colonel Skopenko, impressed by the picturesque townscape, prevented the bombardment of the town by ignoring the order received. In view of its hopeless situation, the German units that had to defend the city surrendered without a fight, with the result that the old town survived the war almost undamaged.
