Ujazd is a historical place in Poland in the voivodeship Holy Cross. The place is in Heiligkreuzgebirge not far from the historic city Opatów and is for one of the largest castle ruins in Europe, the Krzyżtopór Castle, known.
background
The place was owned by the Cistercian Abbey in 1174 Jędrzejów mentioned. Thereafter, the place changed its lords several times until it came to the magnate family Ossoliński before 1584, who built the baroque castle. After the Third Partition of Poland in 1795, the place came successively to the Habsburgs, the Duchy of Warsaw and finally to Congress Poland, which was part of the Russian Empire. After the First World War he became Polish again.
The castle was built by Krzysztof Ossoliński from 1627. The Italian-Swiss Lauretius de Sente carried out the early baroque building as one of the largest early baroque buildings in Europe. The Palazzo in Fortezza was looted and sacked by the Swedes in 1655. In 1770 the fortress was again the scene of fighting between the insurgents of the Confederation of Bar and Russian troops. The castle fell into disrepair from the 19th century.
