Autumn mood at the Moorauge

background

The Black Moor is a high moor. It has a size of about 66 hectares and is at an altitude of about 770 to 782 meters above sea level.

It was compared to the red bog the originally smaller of the two large moors in the Rhön. However, since it was almost not used at all, the drainage ditches are now all closed, compared to the remaining area of the heavily degraded Red Moors it is the larger and almost intact of the two moors.

Since 2007, the black moor has been part of the project that was restarted in 2002 "Bavaria's most beautiful geotopes"(Bavarian State Office for the Environment) counted.

  • The Tri-border areaBavaria / Hesse / Thuringia is located a few minutes' walk northeast of the large parking lot on the black moor, it is eponymous for the whole corner. Parts of the former death wall of the GDR border have been preserved here: a 17 m high observation tower and parts of the border fortifications. The border triangle is the northernmost point Bavaria.
Entrance gate to RAD warehouse
  • Entrance gate of the former Reich Labor Service (RAD) camp "Hochrhön", (also Dr. Hellmuth-Lager): The camp was built in 1936 on the eastern edge of the Black Moor, here were the workers who were to cultivate and forest the Hochrhön according to the Rhön construction plan. At the end of World War II, the camp was abandoned and demolished in 1945. The attempt to reforest has failed, the spruce trees that were planted at the time have fallen victim to the harsh climate of the Rhön and have now largely disappeared as a result of wind and ice breaks. Some forest areas around the black moor still remain, but every storm continues to hit them hard.
  • The scenic one Ice rift lies southeast of the black moor.
It leads to the town of Hausen, through which it flows Aschelbach, one of the two streams that drain the moor. The ice ditch owes its current shape, which is in places very deeply cut, to the water masses of a cloudburst on July 26, 1834, the natural disaster was also a flood disaster for the village of Hausen at the end of the valley.
In the Eisgraben there is a no longer accessible system of tunnels from lignite mining, which used to be operated here. It has been abandoned for a long time because of the poor quality of the coal mined, there are still some hidden air shafts to be seen, the entrances have been blown up. Access via the hiking route from the black moor hiking car park and from Hausen.
