Senglea (L'Isla) is a municipality in Southern Harbor District east of Grand Harbor Malta and belongs to the Three Cities (Cottonera).

background

On the east side of the Grand Harbor form the rocky elevations of the two headlands of Birgu (Vittoriosa) and Senglea (L'Isla) as well as the municipality in between in the hinterland Bormla (Cospicua) the "Three Cities" or Cottonera.

The peninsula L'Isla is only 823 m long and 320 meters wide at its widest point, it is located between the two harbor basins Galley Port with the large marina (on the side of Cospicua / Birgu) and the French Creek with its yards on the direction side Marsa.

history

In the Middle Ages, the peninsula was considered L'Isola di San Giuliano As a hunting area, the first building was St. Julian's Chapel, built around 1311.

In 1550, Grand Master Juan d'Homedes commissioned the fortress architect Pedro Pardo das Fort St. Michael to block access to the peninsula. The fortress, built in 1552/53, sealed the fate of the city. In the next decade, apartment buildings were built in the walled part of the city. With great effort, L'Isla was able to get its name after the expansion promoted by Grand Master Claude de la Sengle Senglea received to defend against the oncoming Turks during the siege of 1566. With the Fort Sant'Angelo in Birgu and the Fort Sant'Elmo Valletta Michael fortress bore the brunt of the siege - since it had never been conquered, the city was given the name affix after the siege was over Città invicta.

In 1581 the church became Nativity of our Lady / Our Lady of Victory Elevated to a parish church, in 1921 Pope Benedict XV made it a minor basilica. The plague of 1676, the uprising against the Napoleonic troops in 1789 and a mildly expired plague of 1813 (in memory of which a statue of the Madonna was erected in the city made the city grow - the residents found employment in the nearby shipyards and dry docks.

The proximity to the shipyards and the strategic importance of the fortress were the city's undoing during World War II: an air raid on HMS Illustrious, which was in the dock, on January 16, 1941, which killed 21 people and destroyed almost all important buildings in the city, including the basilica, led, initiated the bombing, the end of the siege of Malta by the Axis powers could only be declared in 1943, the day fell on the day of victory, September 8th.

The basilica was rebuilt and could be inaugurated in 1957, the statue of Marija Bambina could be put back in its original place in the church. A memorial was erected in 1991 to mark the 50th anniversary of the bombing, and Pope John Paul II had paid a visit to the city the year before.
