Urban centers
- Taiyuan - Bathed by the Fen River, the capital of Shanxi province rises 800m above sea level and is an important industrial and coal mining center. It stands on the site of Jinyang, the capital of reign of Zhao.
- Changzhi (长治; Chángzhì) - Transportation center to reach the various locations in Shanxi.
- Datong - A center of steel production, Datong is bordered by the Yellow River. Its tourist interest lies above all in its neighbors Yungang caves which served as a Buddhist hermitage between the 4th and 5th centuries AD. C. In 2001 the caves were added to the list UNESCO of the World Heritage Sites.
- Jincheng (晋城; Jìnchéng) - Industrial city based on coal mining. City air quality is a problem.
- Jinzhong (晋中) - It houses a series of "Shanxi courtyard houses" (prestigious homes built during the Qing dynasty) included in the heritage list ofUNESCO.
- Linfen (臨汾) - Located on the Fen River.
- Pingyao - 80 km from Tayuan, surrounded by very well preserved walls, Pingyao is included in the list of Thematic: World Heritage Sites.
- Yangquan (阳泉; Yángquán) - Located on the eastern edge of the Loess Plateau and on the west side of the Taihang Mountains.
- Yuncheng (运城; Yùnchéng) - Inland city with over 5 million inhabitants.
