Silesia (Śląsk) is a historical region located in the southern part of Poland.
To know
The origin of the name is controversial; according to some it derives from the fiumelęza river, or perhaps from the montelęża mountain in southern Silesia - the mountain was a place of worship in prehistoric times.
Geographical notes
Silesia occupies the southwestern part of the Poland and consists of the voivodships (provinces) of Opole, Upper Silesia (Górny Śląsk), whose main city is Katowice, of Lower Silesia (Dolny Śląsk), whose capital is the picturesque Wroclaw. To the south, the Sudeten mountains, with their picturesque holiday resorts, mark the border with the Czech Republic.
The Oder (Odra in Czech and Polish, Oder in German) has its sources in the last reaches of the Sudetenland in Moravia. After crossing Ostrava, the river enters Polish territory and runs longitudinally throughout the Silesia region, bathing the city of Wroclaw. It then marks the border with German Brandenburg and flows into the Baltic Sea at Świnoujście.
