The region South Bay is part of the Bay Area. It is congruent with Santa Clara County. Known for its IT and high-tech companies Silicon Valley is for the most part in this region, but also partly on the neighboring one Peninsula.

San José has an international San Jose Airport(IATA: SJC)which has grown in importance due to its proximity to Silicon Valley. Not far away are the airports of San Francisco (SFO; 45 km from Sunnyvale, 60 km from San José, connected by the Caltrain) and Oakland (OAK; 45 km from Milpitas, 55 km from San José).
Railway lines of the Amtrakthat run through this region are Coast Starlight (Seattle – Portland – Los Angeles, stops in San José) and Capitol Corridor (Sacramento – Oakland – San José, also stops in Santa Clara). The commuter train Caltrain connects San Francisco with San José (stops along the way in Palo Alto, Mountain View, Sunny Vale and Santa Clara). In the rush hour, individual trains also continue to San Martin and Gilroy. The drive from San Francisco to Palo Alto takes 45–60 minutes, to San José 1: 05–1½ hours.
