Stary Licheń (also: Licheń Stary) is a place of pilgrimage in Poland in the voivodeship Greater Poland. The place is known for its St. Mary's Basilica, which is one of the largest church buildings in the world.

background

The place of pilgrimage goes back to the Napoleonic Wars, when a soldier is said to have had an apparition of Mary here. The first neo-Gothic church with the image of Mary was built in the 19th century. The monumental St. Mary's Basilica dates from the 1990s. It is the largest church in Poland and in Europe only St. Peter's Basilica in Rome is larger, which at the same time served as an unmistakable model for the building.
