background

The approximately 200 hectare landscape park is one of the world's most important sculpture parks. The park was created as a landscape park in a gently undulating meadow and forest area and includes meadows, groups of trees and wooded areas with visual connections to the surrounding landscape.

The name is derived from a nearby mountain range, the Storm King Mountain, which shows parallels to the Middle Rhine Valley with a rock face that slopes steeply to the Hudson.

history

In 1960 the local entrepreneur Ralph E. Ogden donated 30 hectares of land around a villa that now houses the museum, as well as some paintings by the Hudson River School, romantic landscape painting. The first sculptures were not added until the 1960s. Since Ogden's death in 1974, his son-in-law, H. Peter Stern, allowed him to gradually expand to today's size through further acquisitions of large sculptures and land.
