The part South of Krakow consists of six districts. The most interesting are Podgórze and Dębniki, located on the bank of the Vistula in front of the old City. The districts further south (Lagiewniki, Kurdwanów, Biezanow) are mainly residential.
Understand
City status was granted to Podgórze in 1784 and until 1915 it was an independent city. In 1915 it became a district of Krakow and at that time it constituted a fifth of the city of Krakow.
In 1941, the Jewish ghetto in Krakow was officially established in Podgórze by the Nazi occupation authorities. In 1943, the ghetto was "liquidated" and residents were moved to concentration camps. The monument in the Place des Héros du ghetto (Plac Bohaterów Getta) is inspired by this event, when deported Jews were forced to leave their belongings (furniture, etc.) in the square before trains directed them to the camps. The award-winning film “Schindler's List” to get an idea of the living conditions in the Krakow ghetto and the Płaszów camps and to understand the history of Oscar Schindler's enamel factory. There are still some props left over from the filming in Lebanon Labor Camp, but it is important to know which ones are not the real thing.
Podgórze remains to this day one of the most "industrialized" districts located near the center of Krakow, but recently a process of gentrification has been initiated with a cultural development with the Museum of Contemporary Art in Krakow and projects of housing in former industrial areas.
