Supraśl is a historical place and state recognized health resort in Poland in the voivodeship Podlaskie. The place is east of Białystok at the Supraśl and is known for its baroque Polish Orthodox Monastery of the Annunciation.

background

In 1501 an Orthodox monastery was founded in the place and the Renaissance Church of the Annunciation was built. The important monastery library was also established in the 16th century. The monastery joined the Union of Brest in 1609 and Supraśl became the seat of a uniied bishop. The baroque monastery buildings around the church were built in the 17th and 18th centuries. After the Third Partition of Poland in 1795, the place came successively to Prussia and in 1807 to Russia, which first abolished the University of the Diocese and in 1824 also the University of the Monastery and gave it to the Orthodox, who fled to the east at the beginning of the First World War and took numerous monastery treasures with them . After the First World War, Supraśl became Polish again and the monastery Catholic. In 1944 the monastery was vandalized by the Nazi regime. It was rebuilt by 2004 and given to the Polish Orthodox Church.
